July 4th marks Independence Day in the United States—a day when, in 1776, 13 colonies declared independence from Great Britain and took their first steps as a new nation.
Back then in Japan, the country was in the middle of the Edo Period under a strict isolation policy known as sakoku. There were still aliving a lot of “Samurai”.
While Japan had limited trade relations with only the Dutch and Chinese, it was also building its own unique scientific and cultural advancements.
One fascinating coincidence: in that same year—1776—Japan saw the invention of the Erekiteru, a device that generated and stored static electricity. Based on imported Dutch equipment, it was improved upon domestically and eventually became a symbol of early Japanese electrical experimentation.

Electricity began to influence the world of medicine in the 18th century.
At first, the Erekiteru was mostly used as a curiosity or showpiece, but over time, people discovered that electricity could be used therapeutically. This led to early experiments with electric shock treatments, and by the 19th century, electricity was even lighting up city streets—offering brighter, safer alternatives to oil lamps and gaslights.
