Konnichiwa from Japan!
Can you believe it’s already May?
In Japan, this time of year brings a breath of fresh air—both literally and culturally. One unique cultural tradition is “Haiku”, a poetic form consisting of 17 syllables (5-7-5) that must include a kigo(seasonal word). These kigo evoke imagery of the natural world and help root the haiku in a particular time of year.
Here are just a few kigo that remind us of May in Japan:
Shin Ryoku (新緑) – The vivid green of fresh young leaves sprouting in early summer
Yae Zakura (八重桜) – Late-blooming cherry blossoms with five or more petals
Seiran (青嵐) – A brisk wind blowing over lush greenery
Kingyo (金魚) – The ornamental goldfish, a nostalgic symbol of summer approaching
Just imagine: surrounded by young trees, under blooming cherry blossoms, feeling the breeze as goldfish swim nearby. It might sound like something from the countryside nowadays, but to many Japanese, this is what May looks and feels like.
And if you ask us what else May means… well, we might say:
