### October 12 – Sports Day
Sports Day is a Japanese national holiday that encourages people to enjoy sports and maintain a healthy and active lifestyle.
The holiday was originally established to commemorate the **1964 Tokyo Olympic Games**, whose opening ceremony was held on October 10. Today, Sports Day is celebrated on the second Monday of October.
In Japan, schools and local communities traditionally hold sporting events known as **“Undokai” (sports festivals)** around this season. These events often include relay races, team competitions, and other activities that encourage people of all ages to enjoy physical exercise.
When Tokyo hosted the Olympic Games again, the holiday was temporarily moved from October to July in both **2020 and 2021** to coincide with the Olympic schedule. The Tokyo 2020 Games were ultimately held in 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
October in Japan has traditionally been considered a comfortable season for outdoor activities. However, warmer temperatures have continued later into the year in recent years, and some schools now hold their sports festivals in spring instead.
Whether exercising in Japan or elsewhere, it is always important to stay hydrated, replenish salt and electrolytes when necessary, and take care of yourself when exercising in hot weather.
We hope everyone has a safe and enjoyable Sports Day!
