What Is Obon?
Obon is a traditional Japanese summer observance dedicated to honoring the spirits of one’s ancestors.
The tradition is believed to have originated from Buddhist customs in India and was introduced to Japan around the seventh century.
Traditionally, families light small welcoming fires near the entrance of their homes to guide the spirits of their ancestors back home. Family members then gather, share meals, visit ancestral graves, and spend time remembering those who have passed away.
At the end of the Obon period, farewell fires are lit to guide the spirits back to the other world.
Although customs vary by region and family, Obon remains an important time for many people in Japan to return to their hometowns, gather with relatives, and honor their ancestors.
