What is “Silver Week” in Japan?
Japan has several national holidays throughout the year, and occasionally multiple holidays fall close together, creating a longer holiday period.
The most famous example is Golden Week, which takes place from late April to early May.
A similar holiday period can sometimes occur in September. When several September holidays line up to create consecutive days off, the period is commonly known as “Silver Week.”
In 2026, three national holidays fall consecutively:
September 21 — Respect for the Aged Day
This national holiday honors elderly people and celebrates their many years of contribution to society. It is observed on the third Monday of September each year.
September 22 — Citizen’s Holiday
Under Japanese law, when a weekday falls between two national holidays, that day also becomes a national holiday. In 2026, September 22 falls between Respect for the Aged Day and Autumnal Equinox Day, making it a holiday as well.
September 23 — Autumnal Equinox Day
This holiday marks the autumnal equinox, when the length of day and night is approximately equal. After this period, the nights gradually become longer in Japan, signaling the arrival of autumn and the approach of winter.
Although “Silver Week” is not an official name for a national holiday, the term is widely used in Japan when the September holidays create a longer consecutive break.
