About Golden Week in Japan
Golden Week is one of Japan’s major holiday periods, consisting of several national holidays in late April and early May.
- May 3: Constitution Memorial Day
- May 4: Greenery Day
- May 5: Children’s Day
- May 6: Substitute Holiday
Constitution Memorial Day marks the day when the Constitution of Japan came into effect. It is a day to reflect on the principles of popular sovereignty, respect for fundamental human rights, and pacifism.
Children’s Day is a holiday to respect children’s personalities, wish for their happiness, and express gratitude to mothers. It is also traditionally known as Tango no Sekku, a day originally associated with wishing for the healthy growth of boys.
During this season, koinobori carp streamers are displayed across Japan to wish for children’s growth and success. Families may also display May dolls, often featuring helmets or armor, to symbolize strength and healthy development.
In Japan, when a weekday falls between two national holidays, it may also become a public holiday. This is why May 4 became part of the Golden Week holiday period.
