About the Emperor’s Birthday in Japan

The Emperor’s Birthday is a national holiday celebrating the birthday of the reigning Emperor of Japan.
Because the holiday honors the current Emperor, the date changes depending on who is on the throne.

For reference:

  • Emperor Showa’s Birthday is now observed as Showa Day (April 29).

  • The previous Emperor’s birthday (December 23) was a national holiday during his reign, but it is no longer observed as a public holiday since his abdication, although he is still living.
